The DeKalb County Board of Education plans to vote September 14 on whether to name interim superintendent Dr. Norman C. Sauce III as the sole finalist to lead the school district permanently.
The district announced the proposed action September 8. The September 14 agenda item is a finalist-selection vote, not Sauce’s final appointment. If the board approves him as the sole finalist, district officials anticipate taking a final vote October 5.
Who is Norman Sauce III?
Sauce has served as DeKalb’s interim superintendent since November 2025. His previous district roles include chief of student services, area superintendent for high schools and Region IV superintendent.
In a district statement, Sauce said he was honored to be considered and remains committed to working with employees and the community. Board Chair Allyson Gevertz described the announcement as an important step toward stable leadership for the district.
DeKalb County School District lists more than 90,300 students, 14,000 employees and 137 schools and centers, making the superintendent decision consequential across a large portion of metro Atlanta.
What happens next
The board meeting is scheduled for September 14 at the district’s administrative and instructional complex on Mountain Industrial Boulevard in Stone Mountain. If Sauce is approved as the finalist, Georgia’s required public-notice period will precede the expected October 5 final vote.
Until that final action occurs, Sauce remains the interim superintendent and the permanent appointment is not complete.
