The Atlanta Falcons’ quarterback situation got even more complicated Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Cooper Rush was benched in the third quarter of a 34–3 loss to the Carolina Panthers, and rookie Jack Strand’s first NFL pass was intercepted and returned for a touchdown.
Rush finished 10-of-17 for 86 yards with two interceptions and a lost fumble, according to WSB-TV’s report of the Associated Press game story. Strand went 8-of-15 for 59 yards with an interception and a lost fumble after replacing him.
Atlanta still hasn’t reached the red zone
The quarterback turnovers were part of a larger offensive breakdown. Atlanta failed to reach the red zone for a second consecutive game. Carolina built a 20–3 halftime lead and forced five Falcons turnovers overall.
Head coach Kevin Stefanski declined to make the loss about one position. “I’m disappointed in our performance as a football team,” he said after the game, adding that the staff would look for answers across the roster.
Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa were both in street clothes Sunday. Penix continues working back from last season’s torn ACL, while Tagovailoa has been dealing with an oblique injury.
A short week makes the decision more urgent
The Falcons travel to Green Bay for a Thursday night game, leaving little time to decide who takes the first-team snaps. Stefanski said immediately after Sunday’s loss that it was too early to announce the plan.
For Atlanta fans, the next major update will be the practice participation of Penix and Tagovailoa and whether either is cleared to play Thursday.
