The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says Donquez Thomas, 26, of Lithonia, died after a DeKalb County officer shot him Tuesday morning near Central Drive in Stone Mountain.
In its October 13 preliminary account, the GBI said officers responded around 8:43 a.m. and encountered Thomas with a handgun alongside a woman carrying a baby. The agency said an officer shot Thomas after he did not comply with commands. It said the woman, baby and officers were not injured.
The investigation remains open. The GBI says its completed findings will go to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office for review. The agency’s account is preliminary; it does not establish whether the shooting was legally justified.
