The Home Depot’s Atlanta origin is now marked permanently in the city where the home-improvement giant began.
The Georgia Historical Society dedicated a new historical marker at The Home Depot’s Atlanta Store Support Center this week, recognizing the company’s 1978 founding and its role in reshaping the home-improvement retail industry.

The marker recognizes an Atlanta business story
The Georgia Historical Society said the marker is part of its Georgia Business History Initiative, which recognizes companies whose growth and influence have shaped the state’s economic, cultural and social history.
The Home Depot was founded in Atlanta in 1978 and opened its first two metro-area stores in 1979. The company went on to build a national retail footprint around the warehouse-style, one-stop home-improvement concept.
The dedication included co-founder Arthur Blank, company executives, longtime associates and Georgia Historical Society leadership. The Home Depot said the permanent marker will be placed at the corner of its Store Support Center.
A permanent reminder of the company’s local roots
Although The Home Depot is now an international brand, the marker focuses on the company’s Atlanta beginning and the business model developed here nearly five decades ago.
The marker joins other Georgia Historical Society installations intended to preserve business history in the same public format used for people, places and major events across the state.
