A proposal to give Peachtree Circle local historic-district protection has been shelved after a long-running disagreement in Ansley Park.
Atlanta’s City Council voted 11–4 on September 8 to file the proposal, ending that legislative effort, according to Rough Draft Atlanta.
Why neighbors disagreed
Supporters argued that additional protection was needed to preserve the street’s older homes and character. Opponents raised concerns about restrictions on property owners.
Interest in the proposal intensified after an older Peachtree Circle home was demolished in January. A previous effort involving Ansley Park had fallen apart in 2022 after a lawsuit, Rough Draft reported.
Could a different proposal return?
Council members discussed alternatives, including a district limited to supportive properties and an overlay approach. Those discussions did not approve new protections.
Council member Alex Wan said a smaller proposal would have to start the process again. For now, the Peachtree Circle designation considered in this vote is not moving forward.
