Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger has joined a bipartisan group of election officials asking the U.S. Supreme Court not to allow new Postal Service mail-verification rules to take effect immediately before the November election.

The brief includes 38 current and former election officials from 10 states. It argues that changing the process close to Election Day could create confusion for voters and administrators who are already operating under established deadlines and procedures.

The participating officials did not take a position on whether the proposed rules are lawful. Their filing focuses on timing and asks the court to keep the current pause in place through this election cycle.

The case before the court

A federal court blocked the Postal Service changes from taking effect before the November election. The Trump administration then asked the Supreme Court to permit the plan to move forward while the legal dispute continues.

Raffensperger and the other officials argue that last-minute implementation could affect how mailed ballots are verified and processed. Their brief asks the justices to avoid changing the operational rules while voters are already requesting and returning ballots.
