The University of Georgia has disciplined a civilian police IT employee after finding two unauthorized searches of its Flock license-plate database.
In a September 11 statement, UGA said the employee received a 20-business-day unpaid suspension and a demotion. The university said its internal investigation did not find criminal conduct.
What the review found
The searches happened during 2025 and involved incidents in which the employee had a personal interest: a hit-and-run involving a family vehicle and a theft at a local business.
Although the employee had database access, the searches lacked supervisor approval and were not requested by the outside agencies handling those incidents, according to UGA.
What changes next
UGA said the employee will lose access to investigative databases. The department will also review Flock searches monthly. The university said it had already tightened approval requirements in July, before discovering these searches.
