North Point Mall is headed toward its biggest transformation since opening more than 30 years ago. Alpharetta’s City Council approved a sweeping redevelopment plan centered on a proposed 20,000-seat arena and a new mixed-use district.
The council approved the plan on a 4–3 vote after a marathon meeting that stretched into the early morning of Aug. 25. The roughly 99-acre proposal comes from Jamestown and New York Life, which aim to replace much of the traditional mall property with housing, offices, hotels, restaurants, stores and parks.
What the plan includes
Current plans call for approximately 1,385 apartments, 750,000 square feet of office space, 650 hotel rooms and 565,000 square feet of commercial space. Nearly 27 acres would be reserved for open space, with connections planned to the Alpha Loop.
Most of the enclosed mall would eventually be demolished, although major anchors including Dillard’s and Von Maur are expected to remain. The proposal also includes structured parking and a smaller practice venue alongside the main arena.
The NHL question
The 20,000-seat arena is designed to support major concerts and sports, but much of the attention has focused on the possibility of bringing an NHL franchise back to metro Atlanta. Approval of the development does not mean a team has been awarded, and the NHL has not guaranteed expansion to the region.
Developers will still need to move through financing, detailed design and construction approvals. The arena component is tied closely to the effort to secure a team, so the final version and timeline could change.
Even without an NHL commitment, the vote clears a major local hurdle for turning one of North Fulton’s best-known retail properties into a denser entertainment and residential district.
