Residents in two metro Atlanta communities are dealing with separate railroad-crossing disruptions—repeated freight-train blockages near Atlanta’s West End and a temporary maintenance closure in Duluth.

People living near the Atlanta crossing said stopped trains have blocked walking routes, vehicle access and, at times, first responders. Federal Railroad Administration data showed 22 reports at the intersection during the previous year, according to WSB-TV’s September 9 report.
Two different causes
The Atlanta complaints involve trains remaining across a roadway for extended periods. Residents said nearby construction has reduced alternative routes, making each blockage more disruptive for people walking or driving through the area.
In Duluth, Norfolk Southern temporarily closed a separate crossing for maintenance. That work is a planned closure rather than the same type of stopped-train problem reported in Atlanta, but residents said it also limited a familiar neighborhood connection.
How blocked crossings are reported
The Federal Railroad Administration maintains a national portal for reports of trains blocking public highway-rail grade crossings. The agency asks users to file one report per incident and provide details about the location and duration.
Reports can be submitted through the FRA blocked-crossing portal. The database helps document recurring problems, although a submitted report does not guarantee an immediate enforcement response or infrastructure change.
Drivers should not attempt to go around lowered gates or stopped trains. If a crossing blocks an emergency response, residents should contact 911 and provide the exact crossing location.
