Atlanta City Council approved a Parking Bill of Rights on September 8, establishing new disclosure and consumer-protection requirements for privately operated parking lots and garages. The vote replaces the proposal status reported in an earlier version of this article.
The ordinance requires operators to clearly display rates, fees, penalties and accepted payment methods before customers park. It also calls for disclosure of surveillance practices and clearer procedures for challenging parking charges.
Council said the rules include a 30-day period for motorists to contest certain charges. The measure focuses on park-for-hire facilities rather than Atlanta’s on-street parking system.
The new requirements are expected to take effect within 180 days. Operators that violate the ordinance may face fines of up to $1,000. Until implementation is complete, drivers should continue reviewing the terms posted at each facility.
