Metro Atlanta is starting Monday dry, but forecasters are watching for another round of strong to severe thunderstorms later in the day. The main window is expected to be late afternoon through the evening on September 21.
WSB-TV’s Severe Weather Team 2 says isolated storms will develop later Monday, with heavy rain and damaging wind gusts the primary concerns. Small hail is also possible in the strongest cells.
The biggest risk is wind and heavy rain
The forecast does not mean every neighborhood will see severe weather. Storms are expected to be scattered, and the strongest cells will be capable of producing the most significant impacts.
Drivers should be prepared for rapidly changing visibility and ponding on roads during heavier downpours. Outdoor plans during the late afternoon and evening could also be interrupted by lightning.
A temperature change is coming
Monday is the final full day of summer. WSB reports that near- to below-average temperatures are expected later this week as fall begins.
The autumnal equinox arrives Tuesday evening. Until then, the Atlanta area remains in a summerlike pattern of heat, humidity and afternoon storm chances.
Because thunderstorm timing can shift quickly, residents should check an updated radar before leaving work or school Monday afternoon and keep weather alerts enabled through the evening.
