Flags at Georgia state buildings and grounds were ordered lowered to half-staff for one week in honor of Dolly Parton, recognizing the life and legacy of one of America’s most influential entertainers and philanthropists.
Gov. Brian Kemp signed Executive Order 08.25.26.01 on Aug. 25. The order directed both the United States flag and the Georgia flag to fly at half-staff beginning at sunrise Wednesday, Aug. 26, across all state buildings and grounds.
The executive order highlighted Parton’s seven-decade career as a singer, songwriter, actress, businesswoman and philanthropist. It also noted a personal Georgia connection: Parton and Carl Dean married in Ringgold in 1966, beginning a marriage that lasted nearly 59 years.
A legacy bigger than music
Parton earned 25 No. 1 country singles, 11 Grammy Awards and induction into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Her work on screen included 9 to 5, Steel Magnolias and the Georgia-filmed Joyful Noise.
Her impact also reached millions of families through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, which provides free books to young children. That combination of music, generosity and warmth made her a rare figure whose influence crossed generations and genres.
Georgia’s one-week tribute placed her among the cultural figures whose passing was recognized not only by fans, but through an official statewide mark of respect.
