Hundreds of flags placed near Tech Green are serving as a Georgia Tech memorial ahead of the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. The display honors those killed in 2001 and includes a tribute to former Georgia Tech student 1st Lt. Tyler Brown.
Students organized the campus remembrance as the university community prepared to mark the anniversary, according to FOX 5 Atlanta. The flags create a visible field of remembrance in one of the campus’s busiest gathering spaces.
A campus tribute with a personal connection
Brown attended Georgia Tech before serving as an Army officer. He died in Iraq in 2004, and the memorial connects the national remembrance of September 11 with a member of the Georgia Tech community who later served in the military.
Organizers avoided treating the anniversary as only a date on the calendar. By placing the tribute in a central campus location, the display gives students, faculty, staff and visitors a place to pause as they move through their regular day.
The installation also introduces the history to students who were born after the attacks. For many current undergraduates, the 25th anniversary is a public memory they know through families, classrooms and annual observances rather than personal experience.
Remembering 25 years later
September 11 memorials across metro Atlanta this year are emphasizing remembrance, service and the continuing impact on first responders, military families and survivors. Georgia Tech’s flag display adds a campus-centered observance to that broader regional commemoration.
Visitors should treat the installation as a memorial space and follow any campus guidance around the display. The flags and tribute are intended for reflection, not as a permanent change to Tech Green.
The memorial was installed before the September 11 anniversary and may be removed after the observance concludes.
