Georgia Tech students have created a flag memorial near Tech Green to mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.
Hundreds of small American flags were placed on the campus lawn ahead of the anniversary. The display honors the people killed on September 11, 2001, while also recognizing former Georgia Tech student 1st Lt. Tyler H. Brown.
Brown was a Georgia Tech alumnus, former student government president and member of Kappa Alpha Order. He was killed in Iraq on September 14, 2004, while serving with the U.S. Army.
A campus remembrance
The memorial gives students, faculty, staff and visitors a visible place to pause before September 11. Its placement on Tech Green puts the display in one of the campus’s central gathering spaces.
This year’s observance comes a quarter-century after the attacks in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. The Georgia Tech display connects that national remembrance with the university community’s own history through Brown’s memorial.
The flags were expected to remain in place through the anniversary observance.
