ATLANTA — Grady Health plans to end temporary additional block pay for certain nursing positions, while leaving employees’ base pay unchanged.
The Atlanta health system said the temporary compensation was introduced in response to staffing challenges and that affected employees were told from the beginning that the added pay was not permanent.
What is changing
Grady said staff received 30 days’ notice and that the temporary block-pay arrangement is expected to end in approximately one month.
The adjustment applies to additional compensation connected to certain positions and hours. Grady emphasized that it is not reducing nurses’ regular base wages.
The health system linked the decision to financial pressure facing hospitals, including reductions in federal healthcare funding and the expiration of enhanced federal subsidies.
Grady cites pressure on health systems
Grady is one of Georgia’s largest safety-net health systems and operates the state’s largest hospital. Changes in federal reimbursement and subsidy programs can have an outsized effect on providers that care for large numbers of uninsured and underinsured patients.
The organization said it remains committed to patient care and supporting its workforce. It did not announce layoffs or a reduction in base pay as part of the change described Monday.
