Henry County Schools is celebrating a major milestone for Darlene Campbell, a longtime bus driver who has now spent 50 years transporting local students.
Campbell began driving full time on August 30, 1976. What started as a way to help support her growing family became a five-decade career that has included regular routes, field trips and service for students with special needs.
Generations of students
Over the years, Campbell has driven multiple generations of Henry County families. She has also worked as a paraprofessional at Hampton Elementary and transported special-needs students to job-training opportunities at local businesses.
Campbell grew up in Tazewell, Tennessee, and moved to Georgia in 1965. She and her husband are approaching their 63rd wedding anniversary, and their family now spans five generations.
Even after reaching the half-century mark, Campbell has not announced a retirement date. Her milestone was recognized Friday by colleagues and the school community.
