A pilot was hospitalized after a small plane crashed in a field near Madison in Morgan County Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.
The Federal Aviation Administration said the aircraft, a Smith Pitts Special S-1, went down around 2 p.m. Atlanta News First reported the pilot was the only person aboard.
The pilot was taken to Grady
The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office said the pilot was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital with head injuries. Officials did not release the pilot’s name or a detailed medical condition in the initial update.
Flight-tracking information showed the plane departed Atlanta Regional Airport in Peachtree City around 1:17 p.m. and was headed toward Dream Team Airport, a privately owned landing strip near Madison.
FAA investigation is next
Dixie Highway was closed at Shoals Court while emergency crews worked around the crash and downed power lines. The sheriff’s office asked the public to avoid the area.
The FAA will investigate the crash. Authorities have not yet announced a preliminary cause.
