A flight instructor and teenage student pilot are recovering after a single-engine airplane crashed Thursday evening near Hulseytown Road in Paulding County.
The crash happened east of Paulding Northwest Atlanta Airport while the crew was practicing routine takeoffs and landings, according to the flight school. The 22-year-old instructor and 17-year-old student were initially listed in critical condition and later reported to be in stable recovery.
The pair called 911 from the wreckage
Officials said the two occupants were able to call 911 from inside the wreckage. Firefighters reached the site, freed them from the aircraft and carried them to waiting ambulances for treatment.
The airplane belongs to Dependable Aviation. Investigators have not announced what caused the aircraft to go down.
The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating. A preliminary finding may establish the basic circumstances of the crash, while a final determination of probable cause can take substantially longer.
