New reporting on Plant Scherer near Juliette has renewed attention to how long the coal plant will operate. The underlying extension described in a company filing dates to July 2025, not a new decision announced this week.
An SEC-filed account of Georgia Power’s 2025 resource plan says the Georgia Public Service Commission approved extending Plant Scherer Unit 3 through at least December 31, 2035. It dates the decision to July 15, 2025.
The unit number matters. That passage does not say every unit received an indefinite extension, and “through at least 2035” is different from a fixed promise that the unit will close then.
Atlanta News First’s October 8 report examines the plant in the context of electricity demand and data-center growth. The unit-specific extension described in the filing is narrower than a claim that the entire plant received an indefinite extension.
An operating-plan filing also does not establish present-day emissions, water conditions or health effects. Those questions require separate environmental and legal records; this draft makes no finding about them.
