TUCKER, Ga. — A 19-year-old passenger died after a Georgia State Patrol cruiser collided with a pickup truck during a pursuit connected to reported stunt driving early Monday.
Georgia State Patrol identified the passenger as Anthony Angeles. The agency said it is investigating the collision and the events that preceded it, while its Office of Professional Standards conducts a separate administrative review.
What GSP says happened
Troopers were sent to the area of Kilman Drive and Bibb Boulevard after reports that multiple vehicles had been involved in illegal stunt driving and were moving between locations overnight, according to the agency’s account reported by Atlanta News First.
Several vehicles left when troopers arrived. GSP said the driver of a white Chrysler 300 drove over a curb while leaving, and a pursuit followed.
During that pursuit, a trooper traveling through the intersection of Mountain Industrial Boulevard and Hugh Howell Road collided with a GMC pickup. GSP said the pickup had previously been observed participating in the stunt-driving activity.
Both vehicles caught fire. The trooper and a K-9 escaped through a window, and the trooper then assisted the people in the pickup.
Fatality and ongoing reviews
Angeles was transported to a hospital and later died. The pickup’s 20-year-old driver was hospitalized with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Authorities had not announced charges against the driver as of Monday afternoon.
The trooper involved was placed on administrative leave while the reviews continue, which GSP said is consistent with agency policy. Investigators are examining both how the crash occurred and whether applicable pursuit policies and procedures were followed.
The circumstances remain under investigation, and the account may be updated as authorities release additional evidence.
