PHILADELPHIA — The Atlanta Braves erased a three-run deficit late Sunday to beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5–4 and rebuild their lead in the National League East to five games.
Ronald Acuña Jr. tied the game with a three-run home run in the eighth inning, turning around a 100.5 mph fastball after Atlanta had fallen behind 4–1. Austin Riley then drove in the winning run with an RBI triple in the ninth.
A dramatic finish
Philadelphia took control in the seventh inning on solo home runs from Derek Hill and Kyle Schwarber. The Braves’ chances changed quickly in the eighth, when Acuña’s tying homer came with Atlanta down to its final six outs.
The blast also marked Acuña’s 1,000th career hit. Riley’s ninth-inning triple completed the comeback before Raisel Iglesias closed out the bottom of the inning.
Division impact
The victory gave Atlanta a 7–2 record against Philadelphia this season and secured the season-series advantage, which could matter as a tiebreaker if the clubs finish with identical records.
More importantly, the win restored the Braves’ five-game lead over the Phillies in the NL East after Philadelphia had narrowed the gap the previous day.
