Georgia Tech’s season opener ended one bounce short of a comeback Thursday night, as Colorado blocked a potential game-winning field goal to preserve a 14-13 victory at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
Colorado scored the go-ahead touchdown with 37 seconds remaining. Georgia Tech answered quickly, moving into range when quarterback Mendoza connected with Penson for 42 yards, but Boo Carter blocked Aidan Birr’s 45-yard attempt as the clock expired.
A defensive game turns late
Special teams shaped both sides of the game. Georgia Tech blocked a Colorado field-goal attempt earlier in the night, only to see Colorado make the decisive block on the final snap.
Mendoza completed 17 of 23 passes for 237 yards. Allen led the receivers with eight catches for 113 yards, while Penson added three catches for 73 yards. The Yellow Jackets were held to 51 rushing yards and hurt themselves with nine penalties.
Another packed night on The Flats
The announced crowd of 52,113 marked Georgia Tech’s third straight sellout at Bobby Dodd Stadium. The dramatic finish sent the Yellow Jackets into their next game with clear areas to address: the running game, penalties and execution in late-game situations.
