FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — The Atlanta Falcons have named Tua Tagovailoa their starting quarterback for the Week 1 road game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The decision followed a competition that continued through training camp and beyond the initial roster deadline. Tagovailoa, who joined Atlanta during the offseason, received much of the first-team work and started the Falcons’ first and final preseason games.

Atlanta’s Week 1 quarterback order
Head coach Kevin Stefanski said Cooper Rush will serve as Tagovailoa’s backup in Pittsburgh. Michael Penix Jr. will be inactive while continuing his return-to-play work.
Penix was cleared on August 22 to participate in full-team, 11-on-11 practice. Stefanski said medical clearance and being ready to perform every part of the position at the required level are separate steps. The coach did not commit to a quarterback plan beyond the opening week.
Tagovailoa completed 10 of 13 preseason passes for 117 yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions. His preseason passer rating was 103.7.

A veteran surrounded by Atlanta playmakers
The Falcons’ offense gives Tagovailoa several established options, including running back Bijan Robinson, receiver Drake London and tight end Kyle Pitts. Atlanta also added Jahan Dotson, Olamide Zaccheaus and Brian Robinson Jr. during the offseason.
Stefanski described the evaluation as broader than the preseason games alone, covering Tagovailoa’s work since the spring, his command of the offense and his familiarity with teammates.
