Georgians Suffer ‘Summer Hair Damage’

By Rick Limpert @RickRoswell · On August 23, 2017

With summer fun unfortunately comes post-summer hair damage. After spending time in the wind, sun, chlorine, salt water and air conditioning your hair may be dull, brassy, frizzy, dry or brittle. Here in the South, the news goes from bad to worse, as Georgians are said to suffer the worst when it comes to “Summer Hair Damage.”

On the positive side, longtime metro area stylist and salon owner, Laine Bristow, says that fall is the time to reverse the damage your mane has endured.

“The summer season can wreak havoc on our hair. Heat, saltwater, chlorine, even just ponytails and sweat, can cause dryness, split ends, and overall lifeless dull look. The cure…. be kind to your hair and see your stylist!”

Bristow owns the Bristow Hair Company on Roswell Rd. in Marietta (East Cobb) and she’s seen it all. She said her main job is to offer the best service possible and serve her clients.

“Everything we do is about our clients. Being a hairdresser is one of the most incredible professions in the world. We get the opportunity to get to really know people, their hearts, their minds, their souls, and their hair! It’s so much more than how the clients looks when they walk out the door. We want our clients to walk out with the confidence and self-assurance that they can do anything, for them to know that they can take on the world.”

Bristow notes that summer hair damage can be frustrating, but have hope.

What you can do at home:

“Use high quality products to shampoo and condition your hair. I highly recommend a good mask once a week. Our salon favorite right now is Wella Oil Reflections, a lightweight mask made with white tea extract that leaves the hair up to 3 times smoother than normal shampoo and conditioner alone.”

What you can do in the salon:

  • A good gloss goes a long way in freshening up your dry locks by adding depth and shine to your color.
  •  Take your color deeper – This Fall’s tend are leaning toward rich chocolates, deep reds, and warm blondes… all of which are easier on the hair the light summer blondes of last season. Quality color lines, such a Wella, and the right techniques can take your hair to rich, beautiful color without the fade that is sometimes accompanied with going darker for Fall.
  •  Get a Brazilian Blowout – We absolutely love Brazilian Blowout. This smoothing treatments eliminates frizz without taking away body, creates a long lasting, unbeatable shine, and seals and protects each hair strand while it heals from Summer wear and tear.

Another good summer recovery tip is to keep drinking water and stay hydrated.

Lack of water causes dehydration, which can directly impact the health of your hair. When you don’t drink enough water, cells that keep your hair healthy might not perform at their best and result in your hair being dry and brittle. Additionally, look for foods that contain fatty acids and antioxidants to strengthen the hair shaft and follicles, which will help prevent breakage. Try to incorporate hair-nourishing foods like walnuts and tuna into every meal to see their benefits.

Enjoy the rest of summer and the fall.
