The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is assisting Jefferson police after a shooting Tuesday evening at a Subway restaurant off U.S. Highway 129 in Jackson County.
The investigation centered on the Subway at 5210 U.S. 129 near Exit 137. Jefferson police initially asked drivers to avoid the area because of the active investigation and traffic delays, according to FOX 5.
Evidence markers were visible outside the restaurant
WSB-TV reported that NewsChopper 2 video showed evidence markers across the pavement outside the restaurant, including markers placed near spent rounds.
Jefferson police said there was no active threat to the general public at the location. That statement meant the immediate danger had passed; it did not mean investigators had finished determining what happened.
Authorities have released few case details
As of the initial Tuesday-night reports, authorities had not publicly identified a victim, suspect or motive. Police also had not announced whether anyone had been taken into custody.
Atlanta News First reported that Jefferson police formally requested GBI assistance. State agents often help local departments with shooting investigations when additional investigative resources are requested.
The next update is expected to establish who was injured, what led to the shooting and whether criminal charges will be filed. Until those details are released, the incident remains an active investigation rather than a confirmed account of who fired the shots.
