An Atlanta mother says sewage backups, rodents and mold have made her apartment unsafe for her family — especially her 11-year-old son, who is a kidney transplant patient.

Valencia Springer told FOX 5 Atlanta that raw sewage has backed up through sinks, toilets and showers at Martin Street Plaza. She also described a leak from an upstairs unit into her kitchen and holes that allow rodents into the apartment.

Doctors told her son not to remain in the unit

Springer said her son’s medical team warned that the conditions could be dangerous for him because of his transplant history. Medical staff reportedly offered him a hospital room because remaining in the apartment could pose a health risk.

She also said the problems are not limited to her unit and described rats, roaches, mildew and mold as issues affecting other residents in the complex.

Atlanta Housing says repairs are being coordinated

Atlanta Housing told FOX 5 that crews are coordinating plumbing repairs, pest-control work and meetings with residents. Officials had not provided a firm timeline for permanent plumbing repairs or complete pest eradication.

The next important update is whether the family is moved to a safer unit or whether repairs make the apartment medically acceptable for Springer’s son to return.
