Atlanta police have charged a 23-year-old man with murder and first-degree arson after a man was found dead inside a burned apartment in southwest Atlanta.

The fire happened around 9:45 p.m. on Sept. 23 at an apartment complex in the 1700 block of Stanton Road in the Pomona Park area, according to Atlanta News First.

Firefighters found a man dead inside

Firefighters said the fire was contained to one apartment and was already out when crews arrived. Inside the unit, they found a man believed to be in his 20s dead. His identity has not been publicly released.

Fire officials considered the death suspicious and requested help from Atlanta police and arson investigators. On Friday, homicide detectives obtained warrants for Robert Smith on charges of murder, aggravated assault and first-degree arson.

Smith was already in jail

Police said Smith was already being held at the Fulton County Jail on unrelated charges when the new warrants were issued. Those warrants were forwarded to the jail.

The new charges are allegations and do not establish guilt. Investigators had not publicly released a motive or detailed what evidence led them to seek the warrants.
