By Rick Limpert @RickRoswell · On January 10, 2017

CES 2017 just wrapped up its run in Las Vegas, and an Atlanta-based nationwide local TV news service NewsON was making waves and news of its own.

Living in Digital Times announced NewsON as a finalist in the 2017 CES Mobile Apps Showdown awards honoring the most innovative apps at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2017, but the app has been garnering a lot of attention from television viewers and news enthusiasts for a while.

Now in its 8th year, the Mobile Apps Showdown combines online crowd voting with expert panel review. Each finalist was selected by a panel of judges, including journalists, engineers, designers and developers. In early December 2016, the judges chose the top mobile apps to compete in an online vote and a live competition on Jan. 7, 2017 where an applause-o-meter measures audience enthusiasm to determine the winner. NewsOn was one of the finalists.

NewsON is a first-of-its-kind service that provides consumers with access to live and on-demand local newscasts as well as local news clips on mobile, web and connected TV devices. The NewsON app gives people access from Apple or Android smartphones and Amazon tablets as well as Roku enabled smart TVs.

NewsON comprises of 175 stations in 110 markets covering 84% of the U.S. population, including 48 of the top 50 markets and 89 out of the top 100 markets. It’s the best way for those who might be displaced to another city, to watch local news from their hometowns.

NewsON provides a nationwide lineup of local news from trusted, credible TV stations, giving consumers access to live and on-demand local newscasts and local news clips. NewsON is available for Apple iPhone and iPad, Android phone and tablet, and Roku devices, and offers a free, ad-supported app which features instant access to broadcast-quality video. The NewsON ownership group includes the ABC Owned Television Station Group, Capitol Broadcasting, Cox Media Group, Hearst Television, Hubbard Broadcasting, Media General, Raycom Media and Sinclair Broadcast Group, and also includes additional station groups that are dedicated to serving customers across platforms in their communities and beyond.
