Columbus native, Hugh Royer, is setting up shop at Tidewater Golf Club in Myrtle Beach, SC, with his new golf instructional school.

Royer, also son of a PGA Tour player, played on tour for four years and was a four-time winner on what is now the Web.com Tour. He was getting ready to take a shot at the Champions Tour but thought the opportunity to bring his instruction program to Tidewater was worth foregoing the opportunity.

Tidewater Golf Club is proud to be the home to Hugh Royer Golf Instruction, bringing a world-class teacher to a course widely regarded as one of the best in Myrtle Beach and all of America.

Hugh Royer Golf Instruction offers two and three-day schools, in addition to private lessons, catering to players of all skill levels. Royer, who played professionally for 14 years, has succeeded at the highest levels of the game as a player and been able to translate that experience into his teaching.

Royer, who retired in 2001, has worked with PGA, LPGA and Web.com Tour players, in addition high-level amateurs.

“Having Hugh Royer as an instructor is a great addition to Tidewater Golf Club,” said Chris Cooper, Tidewater’s general manager. “Hugh knows how to play and, just as importantly, teach the game as well as anyone. The golf school will benefit our members, traveling golfers looking to improve their games, and aspiring collegiate and professional players. We want Tidewater and Hugh Royer Golf Instruction to be the hub for instruction along the Grand Strand.”

“I am incredibly honored to be a part of Tidewater’s team,” Hugh Royer III said. “This course has had the highest honors and accolades year after year and I look forward to bringing top-notch golf instruction to a world-class facility.”

Royer played three years on the PGA Tour, recorded four wins on the Nationwide Tour, and was a winner on the South African Tour. As an amateur, he was the Georgia State Amateur Champion, Southeastern Amateur Champion, Western Amateur Champion, Azalea Amateur Champion, NCAA Division II Player of the Year and a First Team All-American. In 2000, he was inducted into the Columbus State University Hall of Fame.

Long one of the Grand Strand’s best and most popular courses, miniverde Bermuda grass greens, the expansion of every fairway, new sand in all the bunkers and an extensive tree removal project, has enjoyed popular and critical acclaim.

Tidewater is one of Myrtle Beach’s most scenic layouts. The course has eight holes that play along either the Intracoastal Waterway or the marshy waters of Cherry Grove, highlighted by the par 5 13th, which offers a distant view of the Atlantic Ocean. Tidewater has eight holes that play along the marshy waters of the Intracoastal Waterway or Cherry Grove. The combination of the property’s native beauty and the course’s architectural quality have long made Tidewater a favorite. Upon its 1990 opening, it was the first course ever named best new course in America by both Golf Digest and Golf Magazine and both publications have also ranked the layout among the nation’s top 100 public courses.
